Human-Animal Relationships

Asking oneself what kind of relationship each should have with animals is a very broad and relative question. Due to the wide variety of animals and their given lifestyle and behaviors, the question becomes even more complicated and detailed than it would usually be. What someone might think about domestic animals does not necessarily has to be the same as those of wild-life.  Personal experiences might influence the way one perceives them, regarding positions and beliefs.
Feeling superior or inferior to animals is an important fact to discuss when studying given perceptions. This specific category is very common, especially when considering possible threats to human-kind. The given situation is based mostly on the size or behavior of a particular animal. An example for superiority towards animals involving their behavior could be a cow or a chicken, in which both may be easily dominated by humans, regardless of their sizes. An example for inferiority might be a bear, big in size, or a poisonous scorpion, little in size, both being threatening for humans. Such situations may be viewed as ironic to many.
Another category that affects a healthy relationship with animals might be the interest each individual has towards them.  Exploitation, cooperation, and tyranny are three common treatments in these relationships. As an example of exploitation and tyrannous behavior towards animals, a person that owns an egg distribution company might be exposing hens to barbaric conditions in order of being able of achieving their goals as entrepreneurs. In contrast, having a relationship based on human cooperation is completely different to the one previously stated. As an example of it, one might consider the humane role of a veterinarian per se.
After studying these facts, my opinion towards the relationships of such creatures are extremely relative. Perceptions of beliefs and behaviors depend on each individual’s interests and claims. Most of the times, animal’s own instinctive actions and necessities affect humans’ interactions and relationships with them.

  1. I totally agree with you. It all goes down to the perception or the knowledge one has about each specific animal. People like Jeff Corwin who often played with animals who are in the top of the food chain. Human-animal relations will be affected depending on the relation each is having. Humans provoke many of their own deaths. Headlines had said that a whale killed trainer in Sea World, my question to that would be, what is a killer whale doing in a restricted pool? In the search for adrenaline rush, humans tend to provoke their own death. The relation with the animal will definitely depend in every variable there is between humans and animals.

  2. Jeff Corwin's passion towards animals and nature itself is truly remarkable, but it may still raise doubts regarding his true motions and intentions. Even though he started his career conserving nature, he has made his way up, to the scale of being part of several television programs. Even though this might be viewed as a professional development of his career, through his relationship with animals, he has being able of achieving fame. What might have started as sane and genuine feelings and emotions, has become commercialized. This is precisely why this is a questionable and debatable situation, even though one might never be able of truly knowing his present position and personal view towards nature.

  3. By taking him as an example, what was being stated was the way one interacts with animals. In my position, I'm afraid of most of the animals he encountered. Each individual has different views for nature. In his case, fame was an extra, because someone who is afraid of animals wont place his life in danger and with fear constantly. According to some Q&A with his wife at the time he died, he was very into animals. As an example, also his daughter was following his paths at a very young age. Is the love for the animals that they have that at some point is remarkable.

  4. In that case, I understand what you are trying to present, but I still believe that within the love he seemed to have towards nature, commercialism and industrialism found their ways. This makes me come back to my original post, making me believe he prolonged that love and affection based on his personal interest of achieving a higher position as an entrepreneur, even though he did not seem to abuse on animals. Based on your comment, if in fact his daughter wanted to pursue his same career, I might be able of expanding and even clarifying my doubt of wether or not his intentions were good, but again that's a mystery that will not be answered. This is one of the many unresolved issues in life, where people may never be certain of other's thoughts.
