With technology’s
rise, many advances and improvements have been progressing, economically boosting
entities. Humans’ greed and desire to achieve and attain more has made them
ignore the environment’s needs and forget the important role nature plays in
their daily lives. Through time,
worldwide population have lost their connectedness with nature, causing great
damage to it.
One of the
primary factors that have developed such atrocities is industrialization. Not
only does it affect, contaminate, and exploit natural sources, but also has contributed
in people’s ignorance towards enhancing the environment. Presently, human kind
is forgetting to give back a little to what has provided each individual with a
lot. Instead, more buildings and properties have been built and contamination
and pollution worsen.
The documentary, ‘The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill’,
presents a man named Mark, which decided to dedicate his adulthood preserving
nature, parrots specifically. He spent his days feeding, nesting, and curing
these creatures for no apparent personal interest. People around him knew the devotion
and effort he as a citizen gave these animals, and for that reason, many helped
him economically by providing food and shelter. Thanks to this man, the
community started caring for the parrots, demanding help from the government;
this movement took place not only in San Francisco, but also in some states
around the country. Concluding the documentary, Mark decides to continue his
life, moving to another state, inspiring many individuals to contribute to
nature the way he had done so.
Living in Puerto
Rico has taught me that no matter the location, industrialization affects every
country in the world. Many unenlightened people think that a tropical island is
extremely nature-oriented and technologically delayed. In fact, probably the
damage provoked around the world is the same one as the ones developed in this
island.
Even though carelessness
towards Puerto Rico’s ecosystem is viewed mostly in the urban area, this fault
is observed in the rural area as well. Since massive constructions and developments
take place in the city, many trees have been cut down, reducing the
environment’s conservation progress. In
order to alleviate this situation, I would create vegetable gardens in people’s
roofs, balconies, and patios, establishing a little bit of nature in everyone’s
homes. On the other hand, Puerto Rico’s land is sufficiently fertile to produce
our own goods, reason why I would promote and help establish crops in the
countryside.
By achieving such
activities, preserving the environment would become an easy task. For an even
bigger effect, people around the world should attain the solutions
aforementioned. A cause this big needs the support of mankind, reason why it
should become a debate of primary interest to everyone. If people could set
aside industrial economic interests, a fundamental effect will finally be accomplished.

Technology has improved the quality of life of many humans but just to a certain point. After achieving the point, humans could end in some sort of way as the people shown in the movie Wall-e. By doing so, nature goes out to a second perspective as people don’t invest time preserving and caring for nature as done before. I must agree that people are creating huge damages to nature in all sorts of way. Now days, with the improvements of technology, cars are being made with low fuel emissions but the damage has already been made. We are not capable of reverting the damage made before but capable of trying to preserve what we have. People like Mark must rise up in every community to achieve an impact as he has done in his community. I understand that there is a population that will always be ignorant about nature but trying to create a movement that will affect positively the lives of many young children and adults will be a great influence for future generations.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with your position on creating gardens on roofs. To create a garden in the roof of a house, one must first create drainage, to protect the house from humidity damaging the roofs and the walls. The cost for maintenance is very high and might be risky for a person. Put yourself in the position of an old person having to maintain the roof, one might fall and die. I acknowledge the fact that they look great and the sense of nature they give is just amazing but the cost to build and maintain is very high. The fact of having plants on the balconies is very beautiful. They give the green touch that is necessary in one’s life. Many spaces of land are being lost. It would be amazing to create some sort of corps and plant things due to the great soil Puerto Rico has.
What you just stated is precisely the main reason why I would implement rooftop gardens in urban households. Since us humans have provoked the development of many atrocities, it is our duty to make sure it becomes what once was. To achieve greatness, one must understand the primary focus for this cause, it being the welfare of ecosystems. Even though it would be an activity that requires time and money, it should be done for the sake of the environment. If on the contrary people keep ignoring nature’s necessities, it will still damage human kind on the long run. Not only will the costs of sustaining it be higher, but more importantly resources might become limited, or even extinct.
ReplyDeleteIt would be great for the environment itself but things must be on perspective. Right now, the economical power countries have, specially United States is very bad. I know one thing doesn't have to do with the other but it is stated to go back to the main point, where money is a must to build these roof gardens. There must be some other alternatives to improve the quality of nature and the whole earth. Everything starts with different ideas that at the end will make up something good for each individual. The idea states is brilliant but the rich people are the ones that will be able to contribute in the same. A cost-effective mechanism must be developed for the ones less fortunate.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with what you are stating is that individuals know something needs to be developed as a remedy, and almost nobody actually does something about it. A cost-effective solution should be established but people have not taken the courage to even start formulating new ideas. As I previously stated, if time continues to pass, not only will the damage increase, but also costs are going to be higher. Even though the economy is not precisely on track, this act is a sacrifice everyone should be willing to make for the sake of Earth.
